2012 Season 5 Now Locked

2012 Season 5 Now Locked
Attention, StarCraft II ladder competitors! 2012 Season 5 is now locked.
At the end of each ladder season, leagues are “locked,” which means players can no longer be promoted or demoted out of their current league or division, and bonus pools will stop growing. That’s no reason to quit playing: even after leagues are locked, players will still be able to play out their remaining bonus pool and compete for standing within their divisions until the season ends one week later. The matchmaking skill ratings which determine league promotion and demotion will also continue to update during the lock, so games played during the lock still count toward 2013 Season 1 league placement.
Now that the lock is in effect, 2012 Season 5 will soon come to an end. We’ll be turning over to 2013 Season 1 on January 3, and the Grandmaster League will start one week following the season roll. Season milestone rewards will be awarded and bonus pools will reset with the beginning of the new season. Hidden skill ratings used for matchmaking and league placement will carry over from the previous season, though, so players who have completed placement matches in a previous season will only need to play one new placement match after 2013 Season 1 starts.

StarCraft II Creative Development Q&A - Part 10

StarCraft II Creative Development Q&A - Part 10
In part 10 of our continuing series, Brian Kindregan, co-lead writer of StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty and lead writer of Heart of the Swarm, answers more of the community’s most burning lore questions.

Question: Considering that Tassadar and Adun sacrificed their lives in a similar manner, is Adun still out there somewhere like a dead Jedi in Star Wars?
Answer: Adun is not a dead Jedi. However, it’s interesting that you see a connection between Adun and Tassadar.
Question: How is it that Tassadar became immortal and eternal, practically all powerful, and yet forced Zeratul and the Protoss armies to come to him (he made ZERO effort to help the universe or his race, but is oh-so-helpful once they arrive)? It is as if he was unable to do anything to help anybody other than hang out around the Overmind's body.
Answer: Who said he's all-powerful? I think Tassadar's presence in Wings very much implies that he is somehow tied to the Overmind's location. This is a character who has severe limitations.
Question: Is Mengsk an agent of the Dark Voice? Is that why he wanted Kerrigan dead and installed Tychus as a sleeper agent in Raynor's army? Is that why Kerrigan wants him dead and not for the betrayal and abandonment? If Mengsk and Tychus had a comm link open the whole time, why did he let Tychus take the Odin and let the events of Korhal and the prison breakout occur?
Answer: I've answered the final part of this question elsewhere, so I won't repeat myself. But for the first part: Mengsk is a wily leader who will do anything to stay in power. He wanted Kerrigan dead because the Swarm represented the greatest threat to his Dominion, and because he understands human motivations, vindictiveness, and pettiness very well. He could not conceive of the idea that the Queen of Blades might not want revenge. He was sure that she would come after him at some point, and he was determined to prevent that.
Question: Since Wings of Liberty has a "crossroads" storyline that involves characters such as Gabriel Tosh, Nova, and Dr. Hanson, is it possible that any of them will be in future expansions? Because depending on the player's choices in Wings of Liberty, some of them could have been killed.
Answer: I'm happy to tell you that we will track your choices. In Heart of the Swarm, you will see references to the choices you made. Now, I have to be clear: your choices from Wings will not have a huge impact on Heart, as the latter is a story about the Zerg and doesn't get too much into the doings of some Terran rebel. But there are parts of Heart that are different depending on the choices you made in Wings.
The choices with Tosh and the lava tunnels and infested platform on Char are both referenced in Heart. The choice on Haven involving Dr. Hanson is not.
Question: How does the Blizzard team feel when people start debating the lore?
Answer: This is a very good topic! It’s exciting to see people debate and discuss. We all love the passion and intellect people bring to the arguments, and the wide range of viewpoints. The sense that you've moved people and that they are engaged enough to come up with theories, arguments, and counterarguments is enormously rewarding.
It also helps the writing process to know that there are critical people out there who expect us to do good work. It’s always much more helpful when players get into a real critique or constructive discussion rather than a hate-fest, but even then, the passion of the StarCraft community is an amazing thing, and everyone on the team very much appreciates it.
Question: Can we learn a little more about the Protoss during the Wings of Liberty campaign?
Answer: The Protoss are an enigmatic race. They possess so much power, yet are opposed to using it. During the events of Wings, the Aiur Protoss—as I call them for simplicity's sake—are still adjusting to their new situation on Shakuras. They are trying to find their new identity, as so much of their self-image was tied up in Aiur. They are also looking for new planets to colonize, reawakening old technologies and, yes, very much planning their re-emergence onto the scene. They are licking their wounds, but they are not done or out of the picture by any means.
Question: Shortly after DuGalle's defeat, the remainder of the UED fleet was overtaken by Kerrigan's forces and eradicated. No UED vessel ever made it back to Earth to report what had transpired. . . .
Answer: Yes, I know this doesn't look like a question. I've copy and pasted only the most relevant part of what is otherwise a long exchange. One of the contributors of that exchange was upset that the above quote implied that the UED never learned what happened to their fleet, when the presence of the UED in the Koprulu sector clearly indicated that they had monitoring and spying systems.
My only contribution to the discussion is to point out that the game says no vessel made it back to report what happened. That implies that the UED's ability to understand what had transpired was hampered by the total destruction of the fleet. But nothing implies they never learned the truth. Their spy network surely got some facts to them, but it took longer and they were never able to get the full picture. It really sucks to lose your whole fleet! ;)
Question: What lore did we miss in StarCraft: Ghost? It never got released, so that gap is empty.
Answer: Any lore contained in StarCraft: Ghost is not canon. If it hasn't been released, it's not real. So, you haven't missed anything! In the words of Kate Lockwell: “Woo!”

If you’re looking for more lore, here’s part 1 of our StarCraft II Creative Development Q&Apart 2 part 3part 4, part 5part 6part 7part 8, and part 9. We’ll have many more answers to your burning questions in the weeks to come.

New Ghost and Spectre Hoodies

New Ghost and Spectre Hoodies
For enemies of the Dominion, nothing instills fear quite like a ghost. Almost impossible to detect, they’re capable of slipping into your midst and single-handedly hamstringing your battle capabilities. And they look pretty good doing it.

No one can really say how the terrazine is going to affect each spectre, but generally they turn out . . .eccentric. Most would consider it a small price to pay to wield such power. Just make sure to stick to the recommended dosage, or things can get a bit strange.

Global Play Coming to StarCraft II

Global Play Coming to StarCraft II
We have updated the Global Play FAQ with some of the top questions posed by the community over the last two months. Definitely take a look at it if you have lingering concerns over how this new feature will affect your experience of StarCraft II.
Global Play will give you access to StarCraft II game servers in regions outside your own, expanding the possibilities for eSports, exposing you to maps and games that aren’t yet published everywhere, and making it easy to play with your friends in other parts of the world. Each region will have separate profile data, meaning that characters, profiles, ladder rankings, progress, and friends lists will not carry over from region to region. With Global Play, you’ll have other regions to choose from as you create new characters, take on different ladder opponents, and perhaps try maps that you’ve never seen before.
More about Global Play:
  • Players will be able to freely switch between regions via the StarCraft II login screen.
  • When your region’s game servers are undergoing maintenance, you may be able to play in a different region that is not down for maintenance.
  • Your game language and user interface will not change when you change regions.
  • Players using Global Play will be subject to the in-game policies of their selected play region.

For more info, please take a look at the Global Play FAQ located on our support site.

2012 Season 5 Lock Incoming

2012 Season 5 Lock Incoming
Season 5 on the 2012 ladder is drawing to a close, and that means that all ladders will be locked soon.
Here’s what this means for you:
  • During the 2012 Season 5 lock, you can’t be promoted or demoted from of your current league or division, and your bonus pool stops growing.
  • Though you’ll be locked to a league and division, you'll still be able to play out your remaining bonus pool and compete for standing within your division until the end of the season.
  • If you're pursuing a league promotion, then you still have a chance to get there. The 2012 Season 5 lock will go into effect on Wednesday, December 26 at 11:59 p.m. PST.
The hidden ratings used to determine promotions and demotions will continue to be used for matchmaking purposes, and will continue to update during the 2012 Season 5 lock. So if you play significantly better or worse than your assigned league at the time of the lock, you may find yourself in a different league when 2013 Season 1 begins (after you play your first placement match). Your games during the lock still count.
The 2012 Season 5 lock also means that 2013 Season 1 is right around the corner. At 12:01 a.m. PST on Thursday, January 3, 2013 Season 1 will begin. Season milestone rewards will be locked in at this time, and bonus pools will reset. The game will continue doing matchmaking and league placement using results from the previous season.
We’ll see you in 2013!

New Maps for 2013 Ladder Season 1

New Maps for 2013 Ladder Season 1
As we head in to the new year, we’ll be gearing up for a fresh season of ladder play. Along with the new season, you’ll find two new maps to explore and conquer for both the 1v1 and 3v3 formats.
The 1v1 Ladder Map Pool
The Heart of the Swarm beta has given us the chance to test quite a few new ladder maps, and we thought it would be exciting to bring a couple of them to Wings of Liberty. After reviewing all of the current Heart of the Swarm ladder maps, we narrowed the list down to the two maps we felt would best transition to Wings of Liberty gameplay. To make room for these maps, we plan to remove Shakuras Plateau and Tal’darim Altar LE from the 1v1 ladder pool.
(2) Akilon Flats
Akilon Flats features a fairly standard main and natural expansion. One of this map’s more interesting features is that you can choose from two different locations for your third expansion. Unlike Akilon Wastes in Heart of the Swarm, however, there will be no collapsible rock towers at the choke points leading to possible third base locations. This means the map will play slightly less defensive in Wings of Liberty than it does in Swarm beta.
(2) Newkirk District
Newkirk District is a symmetrical map that has a fairly straight forward flow for taking expansions and is relatively easy to split in half for the late game. We’re seeing this map has even win ratios across all levels of play in the Heart of the Swarm beta so far, and we’re interested to see how these ratios will look in Wings of Liberty.
The 3v3 Ladder Map Pool
In keeping with our goal of providing a variety of map styles within the team ladder pool, we created two new 3v3 maps that will play very differently from each other. In order to bring in these maps in, we will be rotating Monsoon and Ulaan Deeps out of the 3v3 ladder pool.
(6) Backwater Complex
This is a fairly standard fortress map that emphasizes macro play. Each team starts off in their own fortress, with additional expansion locations that you and your allies can work together to defend.
(6) Twisted Vern
The distance between starting bases on Twisted Vern is shorter than most of the team maps in the current ladder pool. This means that teamwork will be vital in order to hold off rush plays made by your opponents. In addition, the main choke point leading into your starting base is fairly small for a 3v3 map, which will make defending together vs. rushing the opposing team an interesting decision. Expansion locations are placed along the edges of the map, which will cause the flow of the game to evolve heading in to the mid and late stages of play.
All four maps have already been published to the custom games list in order to give you a chance to check them out before the season roll. We'll be watching these changes closely and reading your feedback, so let us know what you think in the comment section below.
Good luck, and have fun on the ladder in 2013!
